Contact UsEMS/SCN Amy Kostant, Executive Director: Amy created SCN during her eight years as a program director at Environmental Media Services. She came to EMS after more than a dozen years of public education and mass communications experience. She served as public information specialist at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and as director of communications for Renew America. As executive director of the Rhode Island Film Commission, Amy headed a state agency that promoted the state as a filming location, working closely with government, film and television producers and the press. Prior to coming to EMS, she worked for the Children's Television Workshop (makers of "Sesame Street") and was consultant to a public health/social marketing firm using media to improve attitudes and behaviors around healthful eating. Gabriela Silvani, Associate Director: Gabriela joined EMS/Science Communication Network in August 2004, coming from the Union of Concerned Scientist's Food and Environment Program. She graduated cum laude from the University of Maryland, with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Management, and a minor in French culture and language. She received her Master of Science in Environmental Science and Policy from Johns Hopkins University. Arwa Jumkawala, Program Assistant: Arwa joined EMS/Science Communication Network in December 2005. She graduated from the University of Southern California with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication with minors in Advertising and Fine Arts. She is currently training to be a certified Pilates instructor with Quantum Pilates. Arlie Schardt, Advisor: A longtime journalist and public interest activist, Arlie Schardt was founder and president of Environmental Media Services for the past 13 years. As a journalist, Schardt was a reporter for United Press International, a writer at Sports Illustrated magazine, and a correspondent at TIME, where he spent 7 years covering the civil rights movement in the south. Schardt left TIME to become associate Washington legislative director for the ACLU, where he helped organize a national campaign to impeach Richard Nixon (the campaign was launched one year before Watergate). He left the ACLU to serve six years as executive director of the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), where he erased the organization's debt, established a reserve fund, and created EDF's first communications program, a formal legislative program and its wildlife program. Returning to journalism, Schardt was News Media editor at Newsweek, then editor of Foundation News magazine. In 1987-88, he served as national press secretary for Al Gore's presidential campaign. |
